calathea lietzei

peacock plant / white fusion

Location: lighting is critical to care for the white fusion as the wrong lighting may lead to poor development of variegation on the plant. The White fusion needs filtered, bright light. Too much light can cause the markings to fade and leaves to curl; whereas too much shade won’t allow for the markings to develop.

Soil: This plant likes a soil that retain moisture well and drain any excess water. Look for a soil that is airy and lightweight and contains perlite.

Watering: The peacock plant likes to stay moist, but not waterlogged as this will lead to root rot and bacterial + fungal issues. it is important to make sure the pots for this plant have the proper drainage holes and water does not pool in a collection plate. Allow the top inch of soil to dry and then water. In the summer months, this may be twice a week and in winter once every two weeks.

Temps: Calathea’s don’t like extremes in temperature. keep in a constant temperature throughout the day between 65º-80ºF. Keep out of direct draft areas and provide proper ventilation and humidity for your plant. Consider investing in a humidifier to help with this plants humidity desires.

Propagating: Root division

Toxic: Pet friendly

Pests + Diseases: Help mitigate pests/diseases by keeping the leaves clean. common pests include mealybugs, aphids, thrips, scale insects, and spider mites. Common disease problems include root rot, powdery milder, or leaf spot.

Issues: browning leaves (overwatering) - remove immediately so the plant does not rot and invite fungus. The leaves may also brown if they are placed too close to direct sunlight. When calatheas need more water, their leaves will wilt, curl or droop. Increase watering or mist the leaves to provide more moisture.
