lighting
When we have a better understanding of what type of lighting our space is getting as well as which direction our light is coming from, we can start to place our plants in the areas they will thrive in the most.
The easiest and most useful way to understand which direction your natural light is coming from? Use the compass app on your phone! This will help to determine the direction of the light coming into your space.
North-Facing Windows: Typically the lowest and most indirect light. Spaces that receive this light are best suited for low-light tolerant plants like snake plants, ZZ plants, and pothos plants.
South-Facing Windows: Typically bright indirect light to full sun in the afternoon. Spaces that receive this light are best suited for sun-loving plants like succulents, cacti, varieties of Ficus, and Monstera deliciosa.
East-Facing Windows: Typically medium to bright, indirect light. Spaces that recieve this light are best suited for plants that can tolerate a wide spectrum of light, from low-light to brighter/indrect light like the Monstera deliciosa or Fiddle Leaf Fig.
West-Facing Windows: Generally medium to bright indirect light, similar to east-facing windows, with some direct sun moving across at the end of the day. Ideal for most houseplants.
supplemental lighting and light meters are great tools to help assist with your plant's lighting needs. If you live in an area that either has obstructed lighting, low light, or have plants that just need a little extra, grow lights and artificial lighting can be very helpful.
